Celebrating the life of

Matthew Scott Capp

July 7th, 1971 – September 12th, 2017

Matthew Scott Capp, 46, passed into glory into the loving arms of his Savior and Lord on September 12th, 2017.  Our “gift of God” Scott was born on July 7th, 1971 in Waukegan, IL, yet he lived most of his growing up years in Rhode Island.  From the beginning he loved life and adventure in the beautiful outdoors, seeing God’s reflection there and being taught at home and in Church about God’s love for him, he accepted Jesus at a very young age. At the age of 13 our Pastor, Ward Coleman, invited him to serve at Teen Missions International for a summer.  After many prayers, his parents released him into God’s care, knowing that there is no safer place than to be in the center of God’s will.  He served two summers with this organization in Portugal and we believe this is where God opened up his eyes and gave him a heart for discipleship and missions, and that passion continued throughout his life.  The motto for sending our teens out to TMI was “His last command, our first concern.” He graduated from Mount Saint Charles Academy in 1989, in Woonsocket, RI and continued his education at Moody Bible Institute where he earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.  It was at Moody that he met his bride, Amy Lynn VanHaitsma, and they were married right after their graduation on June 12th, 1993.  They went on to be blessed with four beautiful children: Matthew, Bethany, David and Andrew.  Scott loved his family dearly.  Family was so important to him as he grew up without extended family in his youth.  His grandparents lived in Illinois and California, so our Church became our “family”.

Scott’s first employment after college was with Dontech Corp. in 1993, where he worked in sales, while waiting for a job opening in the ministry.  His first ministry opportunity came in 1994 at Christian Fellowship Bible Church, in Aurora, IL which later became Grace Bible Church.  He was Assistant Pastor there and loved serving and helping to develop discipleship programs. Scott also loved worshipping God with music and enjoyed playing his guitar and his trumpet in services.  He got his dream job in the Fall of 2006, when Village Bible Church, in Sugar Grove, IL employed him as their Missions Pastor.  He developed several short term mission opportunities both local and abroad, taking teams to Chicago, China, Uganda, South Africa, Alaska, India and more…

His last employment was at his and Amy’s alma mater as one of Moody Bible Institute’s Stewardship Representatives beginning in 2014.

We remember Scott’s big smile and his love of God, family and friends.  He adored his little sister, Carena Ann, as they were forever best friends.  He loved biking, camping, hiking and kayaking.  Oh, and we can’t forget…Starbucks coffee!

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Jim Elliot (one of Scott’s favorite quotes)

He will be sorely missed and is survived by his wife Amy Lynn and his children, Matthew Simeon, Bethany Joy, David John, and Andrew Jacob.  His parents, Patrick  and Deborah Capp, sister, from RI, Carena and brother-in -law, Andrew Nault, niece, Myranda Nault and nephew, Derrick Nault. His precious Grandmother, Patricia Louise Capp.  He is survived by Aunts and Uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews too numerous to name…

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents, John L. Spiers Jr., Myrta Esther Spiers, and Arthur Oliver Capp, Jr. as well as his much loved Uncle Mike Capp.
