Obituary of Jack Stried

Jack Stried, age 79, of Beach Park , IL , died March 20, 2009 , after a long battle with heart disease. He is survived by his three daughters: Carol Stried (James Cascarano) of Gurnee, Sharon Bartmer (Rev. Tom Bartmer) of Antioch and Brenda Stried (Ron Molczan) of Gurnee; grandchildren: Teresa Gonzales, Angela Reasoner (Alan), Tina Ward, Jacklyn Mullin (Charlie), Tony Gonzales (Rachael), and Jason Gillette (Andrea), Twelve; great grandchildren, a sister, Pearl Miller, and fiancé, Mildred Swanson, along with several nephews, nieces, and cousins. During his younger life, Jack, worked for the Department of Natural Resources where he served as a ranger at the Illinois Beach State Park . A few years after marriage to Mae DeVoe in 1949, he worked in research, developing many of today's medical techniques and medicines for Abbott Laboratories. He was awarded for his DNA discoveries and received special honors for his development of drugs used for blood pressure, burn victims and prostate health. After 36 years in the lab he retired and became a consultant for research and development techniques used in research laboratories. Jack was an avid Lake Michigan fisherman on his boat named the Mae Anna. He loved fishing with his many friends and family. He also enjoyed travel, photography, bowling, golf and baseball. He was a past member of the big Z riding club with his late brother Clarence Jr. (Punch). Jack is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mae Anna (DeVoe), his father and mother, Clarence and Beulah Stried, four brothers, Charles, Clarence Jr. (Punch), Howard (Swede), Vernon (Vern), and Roy , and one sister, Beulah Swanson (Clifford) The family would like to thank all the gracious caregivers, family and friends that helped out during Jack's illness. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be sent to the Lighthouse Church of Antioch, 554 Parkway, Antioch, IL 60002. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 26, 2009 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd. Zion. Funeral service will be held Friday March 27, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Tom Bartmer officiating. Entombment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion.
