Mac was ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS helpful and friendly. I don't think in my 8 years of knowing him, that I ever saw him 'in the dumps' or down on life. He was inspirational. He would greet me as 'Chief', even after I told him to call me Buck (couldn't get him to cross that bridge I guess). I just found out an hour ago that he passed away. I will miss his warm smile and friendly attitude around here. God bless y'all.

Friend, you were taken from us early but deserve the peace that awaits you. NO ONE was more deserving of a happy life than you. I sincerely miss working with you, especially when you would stand up to me in my office when I refused to see late patients. You always won. Your integrity is matched by none. Bill always greeted me with a smile and I will miss his generous heart and kindness. Some men leave their mark on the world by the way in which they live and the difference they make in the lives they touch. Bill was the guy with the welcoming smile and a twinkle in his eye. He willingly shared his knowledge, and extended care and helpfulness to patients and staff he encountered. Thinking of Bill reminds me of something that Maya Angelou once said "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Bill was the go to guy for Mental Health. He was always happy to help with anything, whether it was his responsibility or not. I looked forward to standing duty with him at USS Tranquillity, Branch Medical Clinic 1007. He had a special knack of working with people. His calming demeanor was always present and sought out by many, including myself.
After we both retired and started working as civilians, he remained that go to guy. His pleasant attitude made working with mental health a breeze.
Bill, You will be sorely missed. May God bless your family.

I worked with Bill at Naval Hospital Great Lakes. He was a really nice guy. In his line of work it's important to make the people feel at ease and comfortable and he did that with his smile. Bill was the "go-to" guy with the great big smile. He would drop everything to ensure patient care was handled in a professional, prompt manner and often with a sense of humor to brighten the employees day. I have known Bill since we were in the Navy and stationed together in Portsmouth, VA (about 20 years ago). We crossed paths again in Bethesda, MD, San Diego, CA and even while I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. When I arrived at Great Lakes in 2008, I found him working as a civilian psych tech in the Naval Health Clinic, Mental Health Department. We were always glad to see each other and he loved reporting how great he thought I was to anyone who would listen. He always went the extra mile (or 100 miles, in many cases) to ensure all the mental health clients and staff were fully taken care of and felt "special."
Even though we only saw each other sporadically, it was like we had just seen each other and rapidly caught each other up with information about our lives. For example, in Bethesda, I remember him telling me about his wife when he had just met her online and was on his way to meet her in person. A couple years later, we met again and I asked him what happened with his online date, he had a big, bright, smile as he reported he had married her. When I showed up at Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes, Bill made sure she and I finally met in person. I also remember how proud he was when he told me that his son joined the Navy and showed me his boot camp picture.
It is very hard for me to accept that he is no longer with us; Bill was far too young to be taken from his family and friends. However, I do feel that he has improved the lives of thousands of people, perhaps even hundreds of thousands, and each of us will keep a part of him with us forever.
My part of him, that I will always hold dear, was his undying devotion to patient centered care and ensuring that everyone around him saw, or at least knew about, the best side of those he cared about, lived/ worked with, or were his friends, and made them feel special and important!
