Obituary of Fern Akins

Fern L. Akins, 88, a life long resident of Zion, IL died March 13, 2014 at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, IL. Fern was born November 22, 1925 in Zion, IL. She married the late Jack Akins in Zion. Fern was a member of the Christ Community Church in Zion. She was a former employee of the Warwick Company in Zion. Fern was also a bus driver for Zion-Benton Township High School for 13 years, then drove for Newport Township until her retirement. She is survived by her children Brad Akins, Pamela (Jim) Nottingham, Patricia (Roy) Johnston; daughter-in-law Sandy (the late Gary) Akins; and a sister Luela (Ed) Parks. Fern was a loving aunt, great-aunt; devoted grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Akins; sons Gary and Denny Akins; father and mother George and Rose Johnson; brothers Marlin (Bert) Johnson, Kenneth (Mary) Johnson, and Wilbur (Liz) Johnson; and sisters Florence (Al) Depoian, Marge Johnson, and Shirley Courtright. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2014 at 12:00 noon at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. An inurnment service will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion.
