Missing my Father Joe Starling.
If anyone sees this I’d love to know more about him. Since 1994 when I moved to California I only saw him once briefly.
I’d be so grateful to hear from you.
Gratefully,
Joseph Lamont Miller 714-420-2345

Many, many years ago, in the early 1980's, I lived in Kenosha, WI. I was a bartender who had recently become unemployed because the bar owners had closed. One evening, a girlfriend of mine showed up with her boyfriend and 2 other men. We sat at the kitchen table playing cards, talking, laughing & carrying on having fun. After approx. 3 hours, the guys were leaving. On their way out, Joe poked his head around the corner back into the kitchen and said, "I hear you have recently become unemployed. Is this right?" I said yes. He then asked me, "what is it you do for a living?" I told him I was a bartender. He said, well, it just so happens I own a Tavern and am in need of a bartender." He asked if I would come to work for him? I said, "where is your bar?" He told me it was the first one over the State Line into IL. on Sheridan Rd. and asked if I could start the next night. I had never been there so I had to find my way to my new job the next night. I thought to myself...."that man sat in my home for 3 hours and NEVER said a word about being a business owner! What nerve! but also, how clever! He was feeling my personality out to see if I would fit in!" That is how I met Joe and came to IL., & never left! It is also because of Joe, after several years, I met and married Michael Barnes and had a family. Because of Joe, Michael and I have been together 28 years and have a wonderful son who now, has his own family. Thank you, Joe, for bring me to IL. You changed my life, probably without even realizing it. Thank you, I will always be grateful and always Love You. I will miss you like thousands of others. You are in Heaven, free of pain and suffering, smiling down at what a wonderful life you had and how many others you touched. You are loved very much. I WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF "JOE'S GIRL'S",I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU & I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.....REST IN PEACE, JOE, Pamela Barnes xoxoxo

I went to Joes Place to apply for a job. He had just got off duty and asked if I wanted to play cribbage. I beat him 3 games as we talked about my experience bartending. I told him I worked & didn't like where I worked & had to work at 6pm. He followed me to work & we were early he ordered 2 drinks & the owner said I couldn't have one cause I was working. He argued a bit with my boss & finally said get her a drink she don't work here she works for me. That is how I learned I was hired & came about working for Joe. My first night Thursday the other bartender didn't show up. Oh my was I packed to the gills. He came in middle of my shift. He was shocked at the crowd but didn't say anything except do you need some help I answered no I got it. The next day I went into work & he told me he fired his other bartenders its just you & me kid. You work nights & I'll work days except Sunday you can work days & I'll close. I was a bit uneasy as he made decisions very fast. Figured he'd fire me before to long. I worked for him 4-5 years. I always had fun working for Joe with all the pranks played on each other, all the quirks along the way and the fun times had by all with in depth conversations on business or family Joe was a great friend a wonderful boss and I miss him...it will be an honor to celebrate his life and I thank him for all the memories as every once in awhile I plop up on a bar stool at Joes Place I sit there with smiles as the walls burst with laughter it will always hold a special place in my heart....be at peace Joe may Judy be surrounded in your love for her with memories to comfort & silently bring peace

When Joe came to me this past summer and dropped a bomb on me that he was dying I was dumbstruck. I was blessed to have him as one of my favorite customers. The following haircut he apologized knowing fully how it stunned me. I had all I could do not cry as I cut his hair and said you don't even look sick, how un fair is that. He assured me that he had lived his life the way he wanted to. He said that all he asked his drs is to get him thru the riding season and the wedding. The last time I saw him for a haircut, he said, "I'll see you next year" I was hoping that I would, but I know that he is in heaven now looking down and smiling on us all. God bless you during this time you will be in my prayers
