I have the privilege of knowing the family back in the early 1960s when we went to the same church in Waukegan.. I had often thought of them. And just today (after over 50 years) his name came back to me. Had to look up and see what happened to him. My condolences to the family.

Dear Mrs. Mayfield, My prayers are with you and your family. You were a positive influence in my childhood, always playing for me at contest, despite the fact that my family had no money to adequately recompense you. And of course, my wedding. I remember you with love, Carolyn Owen Sommer Springfield, IL

Willis Mayfield was a luminary pillar to the community of Zion and all who knew him. He was the servant of God that God had requested of His people and lived his life just as God has ordained, shedding light on the gospel, praying with those who requested it and lending a Godly presence to those he encountered because of the God that lived within him. We who have lived among him have benefited from his countenance and are surely blessed by the touching of his life upon ours. I know he is being embraced now by the Heavenly Father, who is saying, "Well done."

Zion was a bless city to have Rev. Mayfield here. He stopped on Elisha one time to help my mother get up as she had fallen on the sidewalk in front of The Eye Dr. office. Thanks for that. I always prayed that he would sing along with us at the Rolling Hills Home every Sunday morning. I had hoped that one of the old hymns would have triggered a memory, but now he is singing the songs of heaven which are far greater. Hallelujah for him. My God bless each one of his family members as they have continued with the music that he and Edith instilled in them. He was the greatest. God bless.

I'm sorry to hear of the Chaplain's passing. He was a wonderful man who had a great impact on the community. I remember seeing him roar down 27th street in the Chaplain Mobile with lights flashing racing to give someone comfort. He always put others first.

I can't tell you the number of times Chaplin Mayfield helped us, often in the middle of the night. He always arrived in a pressed suit, white shirt and tie. We weren't sure just how he did it. He was with us in the worse of times and we were always glad to see him. His faith was displayed daily. He will be missed.
