One time when I was watching a baseball game in Winthrop Harbor, I suddenly saw this dog on a leash emerge from a long line of shrubs along the left field line--first ten yards, then twenty yards, then thirty yards--with no owner in sight. How long was this leash??? Finally, after the dog reached deep right field and the leash extended what seemed like 100 yards, I saw Mr. Berens step through the line of shrubs and saunter across the outfield. I remember cracking up and thinking he gave that dog all the freedom it could ever want, game or no game. I didn't know Mr. Berens well at all, but I do know Jim, Mike, Bill, and Dan. You won't find a better group of guys. And I know Mr. and Mrs. Berens had a lot to do with that. The Connell family has benefited from the friendship and generosity of the entire Berens family. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude. God bless you, Mr. Berens.

To the entire Berens Family: My deepest condolences to all of you. Mr Berens was a great man and I consider myself a better person for having known him. His guidance from Winthrop Harbor baseball and later when we were much bigger and causing bigger trouble left it's mark on me. Thank you for sharing him. Jason Tolan
