Obituary of Jay Kough

Jay H. Kough, 85, of Waukegan, died at home on Monday, July 16, 2007 surrounded by his family. Jay was born October 16, 1921 in Sioux City, Iowa. Following graduating from high school in Winnebago, Nebraska, Jay joined the Navy and eventually came to this area because of Great Lakes. While in the Navy, he was serving aboard the USS California when it went down during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He later transferred to the USS Enterprise, a carrier commanded by "Bull" Halsey. He engaged in eleven battles including the Battle of Midway, our Navy's greatest battle. He also went on Doolittle's raid on Japan. Jay served as a pitcher for the Navy Blue Jackets baseball team. Jay was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waukegan. He retired as a Manager at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and later worked for First Midwest Bank, both in Waukegan. He also loved golf and was a starter at Bonnie Brook for fifteen years. Jay also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son Tom and grandkids. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Arleen; one son Tom Kough of Bristol, Wisconsin; and twin grandsons T.J. and Kris Kough both of Bristol. He was preceded in death by his daughter Judi Bobbie in 1998; and his parents. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20, 2007, at 8:00 p.m. at the CONGDON FUNERAL HOME, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion. Visitation will be Friday, July 20th, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Congdon Funeral Home. Memorial donations to Pearl Harbor Survivors Organization has been suggested.
