Dear Sharon & family and Linda & family, Please accept our deepest sympathies. We (Gene, Linda & I)grew up in Walnut as schoolmates and friends. Our families have a close connection since the Borops and Parsons were helpful to my parents when they came over from Germany. I will always think of Gene as a stellar athlete with a quick smile and a chuckle. Through Linda, I know he was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and I am sure he felt blessed to have all of you. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you all. I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Borop family. I know that each of you has had to endure some tuff times throughout Mr. Borops illness. Those challenges have no doubt brought the whole family closer together. It is your faith in each other and your faith in God that will get you through this difficult time. I often think about Mr. Borop and how refreshing his perspective was on different issues or events. In every case, those memories bring a smile to face and very often cause me to laugh out loud. He has influenced my life as a teacher, coach, advisor and friend. Take comfort in knowing that your family does not mourn this loss alone. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Jill and Family, I was just contacted by my sister about your father. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I know many people enjoyed having him as gym teacher, coach and/or mentor and I know that it was one of the classes that made students enjoy their high school experience. I know that you nd your family have a million things running through your minds at this time but just because I haven't seen you in a long time doesn't mean that I don't care about how you and your family are doing during this trying time. Please accept my condolences and know that there are many individuals out there that are better people for having the opportunity to know and be around your father, especially me, if it was only for a short time. Please tell your family that all of you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Glenn Haynes Department of Economics Western Illinois University

Tim, I just found out about your dad. I am so sorry. I will be praying for you and your family. It seems only natural at a time like this to reminisce and I have to say that reading about things your dad enjoyed brought back some fun memories for me. I hope it is appropriate for me to share those with you now since I live in TN and won't make any of the services. I love the picture of him from his obituary because he always had that subtle smirk/wry smile expression on his face. He always looked like he was just about to deliver the punch line to a joke (and he probably was most of the time). I remember hearing his distinctive voice from the stands during our basketball games (especially if one of the refs like Witek missed a call). I remember some of his country music stuff and him yelling, "Pill, get in here" to Jill when we used to sleep over at your house. I can still remember some classic one-liners of things he said from when we were kids. Probably the funniest (at least to me) was at one of our baseball games. Mrs. Tobin left to get her hair done and when she came back your dad yells really loudly from the top of the stands in that gruff voice, "I thought you went to the BEAUTY parlor!" He was hysterical (though that may not be Mrs. Tobin's favorite memory of him). I hope you and your family are doing well. Please express my sincere condolences to your mom and sister. May the joy of your father's life be that which defines this time for you as you trust in the strength of our great God. Sincerely, Chris Kawa

I worked with Gene for eight years at Zion High School and have many memories of him. Of course he gave me a hard time regularly since I was the school psychologist but I observed how he cared for kids and for us, his colleagues. He was able to make you laugh about just about anything. I have corresponded with him for the past few years and have some words he sent to me that I found to be very inspiring I have had them on my bulletin board here at work. Here they are: "Want to hear my battle cry? Well here is is anyways. " Fighting cancer or anything else is like wrestling a gorilla. You can't wrestle til you get tired; you must wrestle until the gorilla gets tired." Gene was a fighter. His love for his family and his grandkids was amazing. I was so sad to hear about your loss. You are all in our prayers. Gene is someone who we will not forget. Jenny & Justin Hoy

I am very saddened by the passing of Coach Borop and would like to send my condolences to the Borop family. However I am happy that he no longer suffers and is in a better place. Coach was a genius when it came to breaking down each race, and getting us prepared accordingly in practice, both mentally and physically. What made Coach so special was the fact that when he had his health issues over the years, he would always be back in practice and the meets, even if his condition would be far from average. I can vividly remember him sitting and watching our track meet from his car, as he was unable to walk. His dedication to every member of the track team, was an obvious motivator for us to dedicate each and every meet that he could not attend. His passion and love for coaching track and field, overcame the fact that he had been severely weakened physically by these health issues. The virtues of Coach Borop that include toughness, honor, sacrifice, and to keep doing what you love regardless, was a lesson on life that he was able to show to us each and every day. His presence will be sorely missed among future track athletes at Warren Township, but for those that got to know him, his presence will forever rest in our hearts. Rest in peace Coach.

When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do. You must not tie yourself to me with tears, Be happy that we had so many years. I gave you my love;you can only guess how much you gave me in happiness. Thank you for the love everyone has shown me, but it's time that I travel alone. So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must. Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It's only for awhile that we must part, so bless the memories within your heart. I won't be far away, for life goes on, so if you need call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me; I'll be near, and if you listen within your heart, you'll hear all of my love around you, soft and clear. And then when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile and open arms. With our deepest and heartfelt sympathy in the passing of your loved one. Sincerely, The Atkins Family 36182 N. Mr. Borop was my freshman gym teacher back in 93. He was one of the coolest guys I met when I came to a new school. I wasn't used to high school and he helped me adjust to a new lifestyle. It's been almost ten years since I saw Mr. Borop. I graduated in 97. I opened the paper yesterday and I couldn't believe seeing him in the obituary. I just wanted to say that he will be missed by a lot of people and I wanted to say thank you Mr. Borop for being such a down to earth guy, and for helping me out whenever I was down. My sympathies to the Borop family. They say each person has their 15 minutes of fame. Mine came under the guidance of Head Track Coach "Mr. Borop". I will never forget it. When I uncorked the best throw of my life he was there. He came jogging over to congratulate me and at that moment I saw how proud of me he was and how happy he was for me. Years later when my son was in track at ZBTHS it was odd to see "Mr. Borop" coaching for a different school! Whenever I ran into him he would bring up the "old stories" about canoe races before sectionals and shotput/discus carrying bags on the way to the State meet. Coaches and teachers can have significant affect on lives, I am thankful he was part of my life. Thanks Mr. Borop!

To the family of Mr. Borop, I have only one memory of Mr. Borop, and I would like to share it with you. I was a freshman in high school at Pearce Campus in the fall of 1976. The only contact I had with Mr. Borop was in study hall where he took attendance. The study hall was huge with over 50 kids. As long as we were not being disruptive and too loud, the kids in his study hall could do what they wanted or needed to do. Mr. Borop came across as a grumpy coach who did not want any trouble from any of us. One day, while I was in study hall, several girls sitting next to me, who really did not know me, found out somehow my father was a police officer in the Harbor and decided to tease me about it. They were unrelenting and I felt very helpless as to what to do in this situation. Apparently, Mr. Borop was listening to their remarks, walked over to this group of girls and put a stop to it immediately. Shortly after that the bell rang. As I got up to leave, I remember Mr. Borop getting up from his seat, making eye contact with me and said something humorous to ease my tension. Maya Angelou, the poet, once remarked that "People may not remember what you say or do, but they will remember how you made them feel." I do not remember what Mr. Borop said to me, but he made me feel safe on this occasion. It was only one interaction that I had with him, but it has lasted all these years. If he had this affect on me because of one fleeting encounter, then I can imagine the powerful impact he left on the children he coached throughout the years. My sincerest condolences to your entire family. Renee Isley, Zion

Dear Borop Family, My sincere condolences. Mr. Borop will be missed. I pray for God's help, comfort, and strength in the days ahead. I trust your family will be buoyed by the words of love and respect from friends and students. I am inspired by the outpouring of love from the ZB and Warren school families. Caring teachers are never forgotten. I had Mr. Borop for Health class. At first I thought it was part of the "curse" for having a Sept. birthday that I would have to endure Health 1st semester before I could have my turn at Drivers Ed. But Mr. Borop taught Health creatively and with humor and I really enjoyed it. It was something Mr. Borop said twenty years later when my son Matthew attended ZB that has impacted ever since. I attended a parent-teacher conference one evening. I was walking through the cafeteria and made eye contact with Mr. Borop. I could tell he remembered me (and my numerous siblings) so I stopped to chat. He ended our conversation by telling me I could be very proud of my well-mannered and respectful son. It was so encouraging that I can still picture it vividly and thank God. It was such affirmation to a parent who lived the rebellious 70's that my wife and I could turn the corner and learn to raise good children. I worked with Tim for several years when he was Manpower rep for Abbott Park Maintenance. Tim is a wonderful young man and I can echo Mr. Borop's compliments - "well-mannered and respectful. I enjoyed listening about fishing and golfing with his father, how the birth of his daughters was so fulfilling for the entire family and about how Mr. Borop was the loving Garndpa. Thank you, thank you for the meaningful and encouraging times. Don
