Maria Guadalupe was a student in my ESL classes for several years at the College of Lake County, Lakeshore Campus. She was a thoughtful, serious, and compassionate student and reader. I remember when we read about a holocaust survivor, she was interested and inspired to read more. She brought a quiet dignity and kindness to our class. Her beautiful smile is imprinted in my brain and heart. I am grateful to have been her friend and teacher. I want her family to know that she wanted very much to learn English, to learn more about the world, and to be and do the best for her family. She spoke of her husband and daughters so lovingly. She was very excited to become a helper in her children’s school. It was a big step forward for her, doing this. In our class, she paid special attention to vocabulary, and tried to include as many new words as she could in her writing. Her presentations were creative, and her classmates were only too happy to help her in participate in any demonstrations. My special way of knowing Lupita was as her teacher, and as teachers always do, I learn from my students. Lupita taught me her enthusiasm for learning, her quietness for thinking, her seriousness for life, and more. I want her family to know that I am grateful for all I learned from Lupita, and all learned from her stays with me.
