Obituary of Lorraine J Smith
Lorraine J. Smith, age 99 of Winthrop Harbor, IL, passed away peacefully in her home the morning of October 26, 2022. She was born in North Chicago June 3, 1923 to the late Michael and Jennie Miller. She married her husband Raymond (Ray/Smitty) in 1945 and celebrated 65 years of marriage prior to Ray’s death in 2010.
Lorraine was a first-generation Slovenian and could speak fluent Slovene language. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her. She also had many friends and was a well-loved member of the community and church. Lorraine was a homemaker and became a legal secretary for 20 years at a Zion law firm prior to her retirement in 1986. She loved to travel with her husband, sing, bake, sew and go out to lunch.
She was a member of the Winthrop Harbor United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served in the choir, and as a treasurer and other committees prior to its closing. She then became a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in Zion. She was also a member of the local Women’s Legion auxiliary. She was a generous person and her biggest love was for her family and grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, William (Laurie) Smith, Sherry (James) Kantola and Sandra (Martin) Meyer and her Grandchildren John (Jane) Meyer, Samantha Schultz, Sarah (Michael) Selas and Jay Meyer and was blessed with five great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Advocate Aurora Hospice for their caring ministry. They would also like to thank two special caregivers, Mary Mensah and Christina Amoabeng, for their exceptional care. They treated her as if she was their own mother.
Interment will be private.
A Celebration of her life service will be held at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Zion, May 20, 2023 at 11:00 am with a light lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donations be made to the Memorial United Methodist Church in Zion (2935 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL 60099)
