Obituary of Joe L. Buchanan, Sr.
Joe L. Buchanan, Sr. was born on September 1, 1946 in Walls, Mississippi to the late Lonnie and Rosie (Hill) Buchanan. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in WAlls, Mississippi under the leadership of Pastor J. T. Wynn. Joe Buchanan, Sr. departed this life on Monday, July 25, 2022.
Joe relocated to Illinois in the late 1960's. He was employed at U.S. Steel Wire Mill and Commonwealth Edison, retiring from Commonwealth Edison in 1996. Joe always held a "second" job. He worked part-time at the V.A. Medical Center in North Chicago, Illinois. He also worked part-time at Hillary's Barbeque for over 30 years at both locations, North Chicago and Waukegan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Rosie (Hill) Buchanan; four brothers, Rowland Hill, R.C. Johnson, Cleo Buchanan and Robert Buchanan, Sr. and two sisters, Ruby Givens and Katie Buchanan.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Sadie; sons, Joe Buchanan, Jr., Memphis Tennessee and Eric (Wrenne) Gillespie, Huntsville, Alabama. Daughters Sherree Buchanan, Chicago, Illinois, and Kymm (Marshon) Lewis, Chicago, Illinois. Two sisters, Lovie (Hubert) Geater, North Chicago, Illinois and Ethel Gordon, Chicago, Illinois. Two grandsons, Nicholas Buchanan and Joe Buchanan III (Trey), two great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2022 from 12:00 until 1:00 at the Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Road, Zion, IL. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private for the family.
