Obituary of Earl Stephen Mapes

Earl Stephen 'Steve' Mapes, 97, of Zion, IL passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022. He was born on April 1, 1924 in Zion, IL the son of Charles and Lucy (nee Clark) Mapes. Steve graduated from Zion Benton High School in 1942. He then enlisted in the Army Air Force and served for 3 1/2 years. Shortly after, he married the love of his life, Margret James, on July 31, 1947. Steve was a member and attended Memorial Methodist Church in Zion, IL, and American Legion Post 0865. Steve worked for Abbott Labs for thirty-nine years as a computer Programmer, and analyst before his retirement. He was an avid golfer, and bowler in a league. Earl enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his sons and grandchildren fishing at his cabin in northern Wisconsin or spending time in the Villages, Florida. Steve is survived by his sons, James (Susan) Mapes of Westport, CT, David (Laurie) Mapes of Zion, IL; grandchildren Seth (Lisa) Mapes of Hanover, IL, Josh (Nicole) Mapes of Machesney Park, IL; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Mapes; parents; siblings Irene Wilson, and John Mapes. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 11, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at Congdon Funeral Home, 3012 Sheridan Rd, Zion, IL, interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, IL. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Memorial United Methodist Church, 2935 Sheridan Rd, Zion, IL 60099.
