I grew up for much of my childhood across the street from Mrs. Martin and was never smart enough to make a visit on Cookie Tuesdays because I never had one of those cookies I keep reading about. I was aware that Mrs. Martin kept this family tradition up until maybe 2 years ago. Rumor had it that Mr. Martin had been helping with the cookie making in the later years.
It was something to see the pictures of the front of the house without the 2 big bushes being there. I do know that Mrs. Martin loved sitting in the front room and keeping an eye on the neighborhood and I wondered sometimes how she could still do so with the bushes covering the windows. Mrs. Martin and my mother often traded updates on the status of area activities. My mother also kept a keen eye on what was going on at the Martin household and I always took comfort in knowing they were watching out for each other.
I do know there is an emptiness in my mother's heart with the passing of her dear friend and neighbor, as they had weathered decades of changes in the neighborhood together. If they did not talk daily in person or to each other from across the street my mother made sure she talked to Mrs. Martin on the phone so they could provide each other with the latest intel. My mother also enjoyed Mrs. Martin"s quick wit and great sense of humor. I am sure one of my mother's favorite memories is of witnessing Mrs. Martin and my daughter Moriah (when she was a little girl) for years outwitting the other with who could yell across the street hello to the other first.
I was fortunate enough to have visited with Mrs. Martin in July and over the Labor Day weekend this year. In July she told me not to call her Mrs. Martin and to call her Joan. I told her, " Mrs. Martin, I cannot do that. You have always been Mrs. Martin to me".
In July of 1993 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Waukegan Mrs. Martin sang at my wedding and Mr. Martin and Angela played instruments. My Aunt Karen loves weddings and is something of a wedding connoisseur. She told my mother that it was the most beautiful wedding ceremony she had ever been to, and she has been to many. Put together the presence of God, the beauty of that church, the Martin family's gift of music, and the voice of Mrs. Martin and that is what you get.
God bless you, Mrs. Martin. Enjoy Heaven and don't forget to sing. May God comfort the Martin family in this painful time of great loss.

Sorry to hear about your mom, Pat.
She was fun as I remember! Thinking of her being pregnant with Angela. She was singing, "Yummy, yummy, yummy I've got love in my tummy." One of her many times picking up us kids from somewhere.
Later she sang at Bob and my wedding at I.C. church. That was 47 yrs. ago.
Glad you got to enjoy her as long as you did.
It's not easy losing Mom. We know they have to go. Reality is harder.
She was talented and special.
Take care, Sue Kramer-Edge

My grandma was a really special lady. I mostly spent holidays with her. Christmas and thanksgiving. The thing I remember the most was the cookie decorating party after thanksgiving. I have so many great memories as a kid decorating cookies and having the best time. Ofcourse grandpa was there to help take care of the broken cookies and pieces. That happened to be part of the experience. It was weird how every once in a while just outta the blue all of a sudden a random cookie would end up getting broken. We couldn’t just leave a broken cookie sitting around all the master pieces we displayed. There were so many master pieces and everybody’s creativity was on display. And it was all thanks to my wonderful grandma. I reached out to her 3-4 years ago to get some recipes and tips on how to make the cookies and frosting and I put together a great cookie decorating party here for my kids and in-laws and nephews. It was a great time. And every year I put together a cookie decorating party. I try to do it after thanksgiving dinner because family is all together and it’s easier while everybody is already together. I’m gunna try get a couple pics of my decorating party. If anybody in the family has any pictures of other cookie decorating parties that took place when we were kids please post. I would love to see them. Thank u and god bless everybody. Celebrate the wonderful life of my grandma!!!

Joan was one of the nicest people I've ever known. When I asked her for help 50 years ago when I was in high school she took the time to educate me about the best music selection for a play we were doing. When I visited her and Don a couple of years ago she made a huge plate of chocolate chip cookies, which of course I felt obligated to eat :-) They were fabulous and it was so nice of her to make me feel special that way, but that's just what she did - she made the people around her feel special.

I only knew Joan for a short time through Star Hospice. Joan was very humorous and loved her family dearly. Joan's painting skills were marvelous, and they joke that all the paintings on the wall she painted, then she had no competition. It was a pleasure to serve Joan and her family. Don "LOVE" and family, I send my loving condolence. -HOPE
