I will forever laugh at the thought of seeing Charlie in a 2 a.m. emergency attempt to rescue me, standing overhead keeping me from falling completely through their cellar stairs in the dark, thinking I was entering the bathroom door, When the lights came on we were all pretty much bare naked. I love you Charlie, Yai

As short as it was, only had 41 years to hang out with uncle Charlie, but the impact he had on me was as if I'd known him all these 69 years!! I'm so grateful my husband Dick, was the thread that located my dad Robert Hoff and thus my Hoff family. We picked up and moved from CA Oct.1979 to Wadsworth. When winter came, Charlie would drive his tractor from Beach Park to Wadsworth and clear our snow covered driveway, eventually we did our own. It was our 1st Christmas in Wadsworth, when uncle Charlie showed up at our house with a tree that he cut down for us. Let's just say it was a Large tree, you know Charlie, Go Big, like room size Huge!! He taught us how to garden so we always had veggies all winter, because I had also learned to can. So of course, he built us and aunt Joyce a beautiful jelly jar cabinet from old barn wood. I filled that cabinet with my canned tomatoes, applesauce and jams and today, it's still being used. In the Fall he would drive all the kids around town. He'd hook up the trailer & his tractor, load it with bales of hay and we would head down the city streets. His BBQs were amazing, he could cook!! I was eventually enlisted to cut his hair so many times we listened to stories that were not only hilarious but pretty interesting tales as well. He loved helping people, therefore he always made himself available to anyone in need. Not for any reason, but showing you his genuine heart. These days now being back in CA, my most recent memory will be him calling to check on us Every time there's a fire or earthquake. You just know that his call is coming. Uncle Charlie was the best in So many ways, by just being himself. He was unique, one of a kind. That's why it's difficult to know what to write. We will surely miss hearing his adorable drawl and omg his laugh. Love you uncle Charlie, you will surely be missed, But Praise God, we will see you again. Love Berta

It was about 42ish years ago that I was introduced to the Terry and Hoff families. After a search to find my wife's father Robert Hoff (that's a long story in itself) Robin, Stephanie, Melissa, and I eventually moved to Wadsworth, IL; not far from Zion and Waukegan.
I will never forget the "open arms" welcome we got from the Terry family. They orchestrated all the "new" family gatherings and made sure we knew all the family members. Thank you Joyce and Charlie (RIP) for your kindness and support during that time.
Charlie, aka Uncle Charlie, was a bigger than life guy and was always there to help. His many "IN THE BARN" stories and tales usually left you with your tongue hanging out; REALLY? OH WOW!
My fondest memory was on a blistering cold morning in the middle of winter, Charlie asked me to help him cut down trees for firewood. Being a 'city slicker" I had no idea what I was in for. All he said was, "meet me at the barn at 7:00 am and dress warm."
The next thing I know he has me sitting on a large backhoe loader, getting quick instructions how to operate it, he gives me directions where I was to go, and off I went down the highway with the wind in my face. It was freezing ass cold! But, with that said, it was awesome!....me and a backhoe with chainsaws strapped on the side, heading down an icy country road... (sounds like a country song in the making).
When we met at the site he gave me another quick instruction on chainsaw operation and eloquently reminded me to be careful as " this f@#$% saw can kick back and break your arm!" "Wow!" I said to myself. "I am living life now!"
There were so many stories I could tell but that one has stuck with me all this time. Every time I pull out my own chainsaw, I take a moment and reflect that I would never have known how to use a chainsaw and keep those teeth sharp, had it not been for Uncle Charlie.
Joyce, Kim and Lisa, I hope all of the loving memories shared today will bring you some comfort during this time of your loss.
Regards,
Dick Lantz

To Joyce, and Kim & Lisa,
I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. In every memory I have of Charlie, he was always booming with something - laughter, jokes, kindness or sharing. I’ll never forget the time he helped me “fix” a floor lamp by turning the wall switch on! You all have my sympathy and are in my heart.

My dad, Jack McCarthy talked about Charlie all the time. He loved to tell stories of Charlie being call up on stages when they went out to play the steel guitar because he was so good! Seems I heard about him most of my life. RIP

I did not have the pleasure to meet "Uncle Charlie" in person but loved hearing all the wonderful stories that Robin & Yai would share with us about him.The stories would have us all in stitches. I was fortunate to speak with him on the phone once when he called Robin to check in and say "Hello" on a Super bowl Sunday. He was such a joy to speak to, we talked about football, he told me about his tractor, his guitar and of his love for fishing. It will forever remain a very happy memory for me. My deepest sympathy to the entire family We are sending all our love and prayers to you from Fullerton, California,
God bless you all,
Elaine Hernandez

I first met Mr. And Mrs.Terry when I was a wee sprout in the Spitz drive neighborhood.
& I became fast friends with their daughters.
I remember Mr Terry, planting and harvesting corn to sell, raising baby chickens, and leading Grape the pony around the back yard. The stories of the trips to Canada. The steal guitar in the house. His love of his motorcycle and his truck. And the best was the love of his family.
Rest well Sir.
The family are in my prayers. ❤

Charlie was a great brother-in-law. I always appreciated the way he loved and took care of his family. We spent many holiday visits with him when he would bring his family to Oklahoma to see Grandma! Great memories of those fun, family times!
Charles always wanted to do something for us or buy us something! He had a servant’s heart, a great smile and loved to make us laugh. I loved this guy and his family. Even though, after 60 years of being in the family, he never really knew my real name—he always called me “Janet”! But, that was okay—he was Charlie Pete and I will miss him!

I knew and always referred to him as “Mr. Terry”. He would hook the wagon up to his tractor and take all of the neighborhood kids on a hay ride. I also want to add that even at a young age I was always aware of how kind and patient he was with my uncle Richard.

I remember visiting one very cold Christmas. Uncle Charlie was “helping” me write a letter to my teacher. One sentence read, “The hens were so cold that they laid hard boiled eggs to keep warm.” I’m sure mom still has the letter somewhere!
Another great memory is when we moved to New Castle, CO, Uncle Charlie was determined that my husband Lee needed a gun to hunt Elk with. He had a gun sent to Lee just because he wanted him to have it.
He always called me when Kim was driving to see us. He wanted to make sure she got there safely. He loved his girls for sure!
What a guy! He will be missed! Love you Aunt Joyce, Kim, and Lisa!!
