Gus and I worked together for many years, we were friends. He was dedicated to providing for his family and would push himself and his team to be the best. Gus always had a bigger picture in mind, reaching everything he set out to do, completely relentless and self motivated. I love him and respect him and this is a huge loss for everyone, I feel for his family. Gus will never be forgotten and will be in our hearts forever, we are all going to miss you man.

I met Gus back in 2006 after we bought our boat. I always enjoyed our impromptu talks on the docks in Waukegan. Rarely was it business, but rather catching up on life, family and goals. Gus was a force of energy always on the go. First Mate provided in and off season services for our boat. Gus was always so generous and beyond fair. He cut us deals I never asked for...he simply offered them. Jen, Lexi and Sebastian are testaments to his positive influence and their understandable devotion to him is testament to the love found in their family. When I heard the news of Gus' condition in May 2019, I could have never imaged it would strike Gus. With support from his family and his fortitude, he fought the good fight for along time. I wish the Phillips family peace and may God bless his soul. Sincerely, Joe, Valerie, Colin and Ryan Swanson

I met Gus around 1998, just after I'd gotten out of the USN. Gus was one of our preferred vendors and it was always a pleasure to see him walk in the office. I remember one morning when we both pulled into Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru and he was in front of me. We waved at each other as we approached and when I got to the window the lady handed me my coffee and bagel and told me the guy that had just been at the window paid for mine. I always hoped I'd get to return that favor but never did. I owe you one Gus! We're all better for having known you. Jen & kids I want you to know that I'm just another in a long line of Gus admirers. He was a special guy and gone far too soon. Love you buddy!

We have so many great memories of times hanging out with Gus and his wonderful family. He always put a smile on my face. And will continue to whenever we sit around a fire. In short he is a shining light that will forever be remembered.
