Tommy and I were best of friends for many summers growing up on Martin Ave. in Waukegan. Tommy was 2 years older than I, and I'll always remember that he taught me to drive in his Mom's Chevy Malibu...or was it a Chevelle? Anyways, Tommy was 16 and I was 14 and we would drive around the neighborhood, me at the wheel, going to Dunkin' Donuts, or to the Dairy Queen for a 10-pack of Dilly Bars. I looked up to Tommy and he helped guide me through adolescence...he was such a nice person....we never once had a fight or a conflict and we built the best slot car race tracks in their basement. Their basement was a refuge on hot summer days.... I regret that I never caught-up with Tommy as an adult. I went my way to college and then to California to become a professor; Waukegan fell to the wayside as people in my family moved elsewhere. Next time I visit Weiss Field to walk the grounds, I'll do it with Tommy by my side, because I know we do not "die", we simply go back home, ending this "vacation" on Planet Earth. Best wishes to all the Backis clan

Dear Alene, Bobby and Jody,
I was very sorry to hear today from my aunt in Gurnee, that Tommy had passed away. Heck, I grew up with the family, going to St. Bart’s, getting the best meat at Joe’s store on 10th and attending school at Carmel. His grandparents used to live at the dead end on Adams Street at 8th, which was our childhood paradise for play. My Aunt Terese just told me a great story about the 3 brothers walking to the grandparents house every Friday night for a very special supper, “blynai” Lithuanian crepes (pancakes). No meat Fridays! Gotta love our Catholic traditions...
It was very much appreciated to see Tom as an adult at my dad’s, Bernie Bracius’ funeral in 2016, and to meet Alene. I am so sorry for your loss, and we send our deepest condolences. May he rest in peace.
Best regards,
Berni and Link Kairys
