Jerry was an awesome conservationist and one that would "walk the walk" He was very generous to the Friends of the Kankakee and we would not be where we are today without Jerry's support. We hope all of his friends can make it down to Beaverville Township in Iroquois County to see what he helped us create/

Mr. Kolar was a good man whom my mom Edith loved very much. He took Mom on the most interesting dates: dancing, canoeing, concerts, lectures, and watching The McLaughlin Group together every night at 7.

I have many wonderful memories of the times Jerry I spent together. We did a lot of exploring by canoe and by foot. He was a wonderful friend, mentor, and a big influence on my life. I will miss him dearly. It will be hard to go anywhere in Lake County without thoughts of Jerry.

We so enjoyed knowing Jerry. We love classical music, as did he, and we often saw him at concerts. We thought especially highly of him for his dedication to nature and for his restoration work in the forest preserves. We visited him at his home and were impressed with his lovely prairie, which he had worked on for many years. We will always remember him with fondness and admiration,

Jerry was a ‘Friend’ to the Friends of the Kankakee for many years. His generosity helped us to make our first land purchase, leading to the establishment of the Kankakee National Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area, and to preserve over 300 acres of rare black oak savanna and associated plant communities in Iroquois County, IL. In one of his letters to us, he wrote, “You know my values -share the earth with non-humans.” He advocated for preserving and caring for natural lands at every opportunity, cheered us through our Refuge journey, and shared his stewardship knowledge. We are proud that Kolar Savanna is a reminder of this legacy.
Chris Salberg, past President, Friends of the Kankakee

Jerry was also for many years part of the regular volunteer stewardship group at Illinois Beach State Park. His warmth and work ethic were inspiring to us newer volunteers. Our sincere condolences to his friends and family - he will be missed!

On behalf of the Friends of the Kankakee and all lovers of nature who enjoy the beautiful spaces in the Kankakee Sands that Jerry played such a big role in preserving, we thank Jerry again for his overwhelming generosity. He left a grand legacy for all of us. Look down and enjoy the view, Jerry.
Gratefully,
The Officers, Board, and members of the Friends of the Kankakee

It has been said that the two of the most productive groups at Abbott Diagnostic Division are rabbits and goats. This would not have been possible without the dedicated work of Jerry and his team at the farm. They never missed a drop-off and were most helpful in planning a schedule and consulting on an approach to make diagnostic reagents. In addition, Jerry was a good friend, both through the Abbott Men’s Volleyball League and as a volunteer at Illinois Beach State Park. I will miss his perspective on life.
