Class of 1994.
On a faded piece of paper--probably somewhere in my garage--is one of his responses to my weekly journaling assignment. He could tell I was rambling, maybe hurting.
"Don't live a life of quiet desperation," his writing tells me, even now. Remember Prufrock. Remember Eliot. This life is the one you get; no other promises.
I remember, sir.

Class of 1988. Still have fond memories of being in your class as Heather Mick. Reread "Iceman Cometh" frequently. I think I became a writer in part because of your influence. Cannot say enough about you, your lessons - life as well as literature - and your impact. You will, and are, greatly missed. Thank you.

Mr. Ramlose was the best teacher I ever had. I simply can't believe he's gone. He taught me about Thoreau, and civil disobedience, all with a loving and kind and supportive heart. I'm stunned and shocked that he left us so early.

I got through senior year and was better for it because Mr Ramlose was a friend who cared and gave time and compassion to me. That was a long time ago, but I have never forgotten him or his impact on my life.
To his family and friends- thank you for sharing him with me and others like me over the years.

Hello,
I was a former student of Mr. Ramlose's and I just wanted to pass along my condolences. He was an incredible teacher who knew his craft backwards and forwards. He pushed every single one of his students to reach their potential and treated us with respect and care. I was lucky enough to have been placed in his AP English class during my Junior year of high school in 2006-07 and I learned so much from him which eventually made me want to pursue an English degree when I attended college.
No words seem adequate enough to share but please know that he was loved, respected, and remembered by all of his students.
With condolences,
Elise Martinez

It would be impossible to think of my four years at Alvernia High School and not think of Mr. Ramlose, and I never even had him for class. I can still see him strumming his guitar and singing at all school masses and other social events. Planet number three lost a good one...

I was a longtime friend and IATE colleague of Herb’s and am so, so sorry to hear this news. His retirement from IATE was a great loss to the organization, but an even greater loss to his friends inthe organization. Still, as the song says, “we always thought we’d see him again.” My condolences to those who loved him.

Mr Ramlose was an amazing man who inspired and supported me through my angst filled high school years. The letter of recommendation that he wrote for me has given me strength and confidence throughout my adulthood. It gave me the courage to go to graduate school at 30. He will be missed and never forgotten.

My sincere condolences to the family of Herb Ramlose. He was such a positive influence on so many, many lives, modeling kindness, great writing, and vulnerability. His encouragement and love of language helped me become first an English teacher, then a librarian. He is greatly missed.

Mr. Ramlose was one of the most influential teacher's I have ever had the privilege to be taught by. He was humorous, understanding, and let all of his student's know that their opinions counted and that we were more than just student's, we were lifelong learners. He will be missed, but remembered only with love.

Mr. Ramlose was instrumental in me graduating high school (Class of 1983). He was a caring, kind, and gentle person. Although I hated the class I had to take with him (speech), I liked him as a teacher. His legacy is not lost on me. If I wouldn't have graduated from high school, I wouldn't be where I am today. I am now a teacher too. My condolences to the family.

Hello, I’m sorry for your loss. This is a loss for many, many students over the years. I had Mr. Ramlose for Honors English in 1986. He made me actually like, and dare I say, love English and Literature. Every time I watch Dead Poets Society, I think of Herb Ramlose! He was “my captain, oh captain!” While I know he will be missed, his legacy for excellence in our freedom of writing critical thinking will far transcend his existence. Thank you for sharing him with thousands of students through the years, our lives are far better because of the difference he made in them.

Mr. Ramlose will forever be remembered in my heart as a teacher who taught with his heart. He always had time to listen and got to know his students as people-not just kids. If I am where I am and have become the person that I have become; it was in part because of the time I spent with Mr. Ramlose in his classroom. You have been an inspiration to so many lives,Mr. Ramlose. You will forever stay in our hearts.
My deepest condolences for his family.

Mr. Ramlose was the only teacher who could motivate me to do my best. He made me want to be a better writer, and understood when I couldn’t give a speech with a straight face with Ray Kramer in the room. I always looked forward to the original poems he wrote for us as a gift each year. I will always think of him fondly and with great respect.

HR walked me down the aisle when I got married some 20+ years ago. He teased me about how much I'd say "like" in sentences, because I spoke so casually with him so often. When I was living in Arlington Heights, he'd drive out and we'd have dinner, and talk. He was a grounding force in my life. I often would disappear for years at a time before being back in contact with him, and he'd be gracious enough to laugh about it. I realized I didn't know that much about him, but he knew so much about me. I was so grateful for his influence and presence in my life. He will be missed so very much by me.
