It has been a sad week for many of us. Bev was an incredible woman. She has left a footprint in a worldwide trail that has impacted more people than we will ever know. I met Bev in 1969 when she was my first clinical instructor. Fourteen years later she mentored me through the doctorate and on to a faculty position. We enjoyed 40 years of friendship and I will miss her dearly. My deepest sympathy to Bill, Chip and Gabrielle, Grampy Jack, Eva and family, Kathy and family, and Karoline and family.

To my beloved mentor, dearest Dr. McElmurry: I was so lucky to be your student in my life. I’ve never forgot all the moments with you. What you’ve taught me will definitely benefit me in all my life. I just felt so sad that I was not around you or even talked to you before I knew the sad news. What I can do now is to follow your foot steps, work hard as a nursing faculty and never live up to your expectation. Please rest in peace! I will always miss you! Peace to Bill and your families.

There are not painless for losing a great mother of our international students. Dr. McElmurry has been become admired, respected, greatly loved mentor and mother, and will be remembered forever in her passionate teacher who never tired in working with her students. As I watch her footsteps, and at least it is my belief that, she is the real demonstration to follow. Please Dr. McElmurry rest in peace in the home of heavenly God.

Few people have had as profound an impact on my philosophy of health, research, and mentorship as Dr Bev. She was a true champion of students, and a 'mother' to many international students. Her ability to create an amazing environment of collegiality in an otherwise cut-throat academic world was unparalleled. She recognized that individuals do well when allowed to "spread their wings" and soar to the heights--following their career passions. The role she took was that of the "safety net", the "guard rail", the one who encouraged you to take healthy risks and yet cautioned against recklessness. She found success in the successes of her students. She worked tirelessly both locally and globally to advance the health status of all people. Her network new no bounds...reaching into inner city Chicago schools, villages in Mali, universities in Asia, Africa, Latin America, WHO policy makers in Europe, the Middle East, and the list continues. "Well-behaved women seldom make history" is a quote that she identified with... She understood that the status quo was not successful in overcoming the major gaps in health science, especially for underserved and developing communities. She encouraged her students to examine their passions and apply Primary Health Care values (equity, accessibility, affordabillity, sustainability, and partnership with communities) wherever their careers took them. I hope and pray that her powerful and empowering spirit will continue through her students, touching and healing lives all over our world. It will take ALL of us to "fill her shoes". Dr Bev, you are greatly loved, admired, respected, and missed!!!

I came to work this morning and saw this e-mail. It is such a big lost for all of us who know Dr. Bev. Even I was in UIC in such a short period (3 months-training course), Dr.Bev was so kind to me. I agree with you all that she was just a great role model for all of us. After I came back to Thailand, I met her again in Chiang Mai a couple of years ago. She came for the international conference arranged by FON, CMU. I was grateful that I had a chance to take care of her, and never think that it was the last time of seeing her. Dr. Bev., you had been working so hard for all of your life and always devoted yourself to your students and nursing profession. It's now the time to rest. Please rest in peace. You will always be in my heart. Assistance Professor Dr. Taweeluk Vannarit Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University Chiang Mai, Thailand

I am so depressed and denial of her passing. I could not respond, numb and felt hopeless. I miss her so much! Bev. is my best mentor and my hero and always be. I still feel her around, lively and her great spirit is in all of us.Although we all are grief and bereavement, she is with God now in the new home in heaven. I am sure she will contribute greatly as an angel there as well as here in earth. We all love her and so do God. We are sad for her leaving….and too soon.. However, she left the temporary house to her eternal home with God and Dr. Ohlson. Let her rest in peace. I believe everyone will remember her, love her until our day of journey. Be strong and follow her foot steps to contribute to the world as she did and accomplish her wish and mission. Good bye Bev!! You are GREAT and the BEST ….I love you and miss you so much. Take care, Nanthaphan Dean, Faculty of Nursing Science, Assumption University, Bangkok, Thailand

Dr McElmurry was more than just a mentor to me and many of the international students. She had set the example for us to follow. Her legacy will endure. From numerous conversations with her, I’ve learned that she was not only a successful career woman but a beloved daughter, wife, mom, and friend to her family members.
