LINDA AND DAVE KNABEL posted a condolence

Dave and I worked with Charlie at the Zion Post Office and he was a ray of sunshine there. He was a great addition to our postal family. He gave me my postal driving test when I first started and I was very lucky at the time that he did'nt laugh at my rusty old junk that we took the test in. He passed me but I bet he was glad the car made it back in one piece. I know he was laughing with relief when we returned to the post office. He sure loved his dogs who were with him whenever I saw him out walking or driving. He was a great person and one of a kind who will be missed.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to my friend Kent and his entire family in the loss of their Dad, Brother, Grandfather, Uncle, and friend. We did not have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Ashton however "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" and knowing Kent as I do, Mr. Ashton sounds like a man Kathy and I would have loved to have known and a man to emulate.

My prayers and good wishes go to the entire Ashton clan, and especially my old golfing buddy, Jeff. I remember Charlie Ashton today and I do that with both sadness and happiness. I am sad because my family and I have lost a longtime friend, and sad because his family must now mourn his loss, and sad for the world and the city of Zion as they have lost a good man and a positive influence in so many ways. But I am happy because I know Charlie is safe in the arms of the Lord Jesus, and happy that he is now reunited with Marge and all the saints who have gone before him, and happy because I know I will see him again around the throne of the Lamb in eternity. God bless and keep you all.

To the Ashton boys, my deepest sympathy. Charlie was a great man and I will always have many fond memories of working for him while he managed so many things at the Zion Post Office. What I will remember the most about Charlie is his quick wit, and boundless humor. No matter how bad the situation seemed, Charlie could always make light of it and show that big smile. Many years ago on a bitter cold snowy day, Charlie was not having a good day. One of his vehicles had been in an accident, one was stuck in the snow, and two would not start. Charlie called me to tell me that yet another vehicle was being towed to our shop. The driver stated that it just quit in the middle of the road and then screeched to a stop. I assured Charlie we would get right on it. Soon after that the tow truck arrived with the driver, and Charlie came bounding in a moment later. We raised the truck on the lift to see what the problem might be. Then we all just stared at what the problem was. There was an entire box bed spring wrapped around the drive shaft. It had been wound around and around and around until all the flailing metal had cut the gas line causing the motor to quit, and then snatched the exposed brake cables causing the rear wheels to lock up. I still remember Charlie walking over to the driver, and in his most serious look and tone of voice asking, "Did you happen to notice if anyone was sleeping on the bed before you drove over it!" Charlie will be missed by so many people, thanks for letting me share. Skip Deedon - Northwest Auto & Tire
