Dear Nancy, We were sorry to hear of the passing of Dick. He has had a great input into our family. He was the lawyer who was able to obtain the adoption of our oldest grandson TIM II. He is a police officer in Geneseo, Illinois. We remember with fond thoughts our work together for the Lord at Immanuel in Waukegan. We pray that the Lord will provide you His promised peace and guidance through the coming days. With our love and prayers for you, Don and Margaret Wise

Dear Nancy and family, We had heard from the Funks how seriously ill Dick was with Alzheimers. May God continue to strengthen and encourage you - knowing that your loved one is now enjoying heaven and the glories that awaited him there. May God give you the wisdom and stamina that you need for whatever important decisions lie ahead. And may you enjoy the comfort and blessing of Christian friends and family as you walk thru some lonely and difficult days. With our love and prayers, Anne

I was a challenging child for many fine people at Immanuel. God knew to give me to parents who were sufficiently respected church-wide that I was allowed to survive to adulthood. I wasn't a BAD kid; I just questioned and challenged everything I was taught. I needed more than the what; I needed the why, too. This attitude drove most of my Sunday School teachers and Pioneer Girl and youth group leaders a little bonkers -- until I finally graduated from high school and moved into Dick Smith's college-age Sunday School class. Finally! A teacher who thought the same way I did! He insisted that we know precisely what we believed and exactly why we believed it. Nothing made him shake his head or roll his eyes except the position, "because that's what I was always taught, so that's what I believe." Dick challenged us to dig deep into the Word and find God's positions on a whole range of topics. He encouraged us to become Biblical scholars and critical thinkers. He would have us articulate a belief or position, and he would then back us down through all the layers of thought, supposition and conclusion until we reached our basic premise. Then he'd challenge the premise. Nothing made him grin more widely than a sound, Bible-based justification of that premise. Dick Smith was such an inspiration, and he was a rousing good lot of fun, too. I know Jesus has welcomed him home with a loud, "Well done!"

I hated going to church as a youngster...Dick was the one Sunday School teacher who took a boring hour and turned it into a discussionn...sometimes a debate. For me he opened my mind to thinking past the obvious problem/solution to creative opportunity. That basic early skill set paid huge dividends later as I served as an intelligence analyst for the US government and as a father. I'm deeply indebted to the passion Dick shared for learning ... His method was always coupled with generous listening, respect, and humor. Jesus became real in my mind under his teaching...real in my heart/soul years later because Dick gave freely of himself. A life well lived for matters that last! Blessings!

We are sad as we write this, yet at the same time joyful that Dick is at peace in heaven praising and singing to the Lord. Dick is no longer trapped by the effects of Alzheimers. Dick was our Sunday School teacher for many years, our growth group leader and friend. He always liked to challenge us as we delved in and learned the Bible. His teaching influenced so many. I'm sure he is now relaxing and has found a good fishing hole. Our deepest sympathy goes to Nancy, Erik, Christi, Missy, Joseph and his grandchildren he so loved. Chris and Jim Dennor
